Shrimp Head meal is a valuable by-product of the shrimp industry. The shrimp head and shell cleaned and steam cooked thoroughly. The cooked mass is then pressed to remove the waste and dried through a steam drier.
Shrimp head meal is used as an ingredient in prawn feed. It is a good source of protein and unsaturated fatty acids, and nearly 10 percent of the fat is cholesterol. It is also a rich source of chlorine and minerals especially calcium. The chemo attractant properties of shrimp he meal makes it a good attractant in feed. It can be used as a pigment in feed due to the high carotenoid content mainly astaxanthin and canthaxanthin. Chitin (N-acetyl D-glucosamin which is the major structural component in the exoskeleton of shrimps is believed to have growth promoting effect in prawns.
